LEVEL HORIZIONS AND PURE INTENTIONS

A SAVORY SUNSET AT THE ARCATA MARSH, 2011

I am still organizing my photographs inside my newly improved computer. In the past because of space considerations, I did not have all my digital imagery in one place. Over the past couple of weeks I was able to bring in older images that were stored on external hard drives into one place.

I also learned that my older methods and file structures were all over the place. I am still a long way from being fully organized (I do not think it is in my nature to be perfectly organized), but I have made a lot of progress. I hope to soon digitize more of my old 35mm slides and negatives. That should be a good rainy season project.

ONE OF MY EARLY DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHS

GLACIER NATIONAL PARK, 2002

I took this with the old Sony DSC - 85. A four megapixel point and shoot. The  camera had a good lens, but I sure did miss the bit depth to which I am accustomed when I processed this yesterday.

GRAY SKIES

STONE LAGOON UNDER GRAY SKIES, 2002

This is really an oldie. I had pretty much misplaced it in an old hard-drive. I came across it and I realized that I really like it. I think I should go back and spend some time working on the many and subtle aspects of our predominately gray sky.

STARTING TO FEEL "NORMAL"

A STRONG PRESENCE ON THE RIVER

I took this last month as a part of the work I was doing for an upcoming exhibit with Pam Cone and Hal Work at the Mad River Brewing Pub. I printed and framed this along with three others for the up coming show. This is an interpretation of the "reality" of the bridge, the river and its environs.

To me, it evokes a taste of mystery - at least if one pretends that they do not know what it actually does because the river is usually hidden from our ground-level line of sight. This scene is actually visible for several miles in either direction. It is a presence that can remind us that hidden beneath its spans is a river.

BEEN UNDER THE WEATHER

KORBEL BRIDGE,NORTH FORK MAD RIVER, 2006

I was sick last week, and did not feel inspired to do much. This image is one that I intend to use for the Mad River Brewing Company exhibit.

WALLS, WINDOWS, AND DOORS

LITTLE JAPAN, EUREKA, 2011

I am working on a new exhibit that I think I will title Walls, Windows, and Doors, a look at Eureka in the early mornings. I hope to hang this show in my little gallery at 603 F Street, Eureka sometime in the next two weeks. I have some catching up to do, but I am inspired. I will continue to post potential images for this show onto this blog.

I just got my computer back, and so far I love it. It now has a solid-state boot drive, an it is really quick to load Windows and Photoshop.

A BIRTHDAY MORNING SIX YEARS AGO

MAD RIVER, JANUARY 2006

This photo is exactly as it came from the camera. I still do not have my photography computer, and I am resorting to older, and almost forgotten images to share here.

LOOKING BACK TO 1972

ME IN A CABOOSE AT INDIO, CA ABOUT 1972

I do not have much to say today. I am still without my main computer, and am not doing any processing. I do have quite a number of photographs that I need to work on, and I hope to start by Saturday.

LOOKING AT OLDER IMAGES

MAD RIVER HOUSE c.1988
I am still without my primary photography computer. This makes me realize how much time I put into my photography, because I am not putting any time into it now. I wonder what I would do if I lost all of my work of the past five or six years, and I hope that I would be able to cope with the loss, and just move ahead.

BEAR RIVER

THE BEAR RIVER, 2008

My computer is still in the shop. I am using my old machine, and I have been digging through old files. This image was taken from the bridge that is on private property, and is a view that most folks cannot see. I was and still am, drawn to the colors and hues of the budding alder and willow trees. I wish I had more of the mountain in the picture, but  I do not.

MAD RIVER PROJECT

COLORS OF THE MAD, RUTH DAM, 2012

I went to the Mad River at Ruth yesterday with Hal Work. We were gathering photographs for our upcoming show at the Mad River Brewing Company. In looking through my images for the day this one stands out for me. I just now did my preliminary work on the image, and now I will let it sit for awhile.

MORE EUREKA MORNINGS

REDWOOD CAPITAL BANK, EUREKA, 2012

I spent quite a bit of time working this image. I did a fair amount of cropping to the right edge and the bottom. I think I could almost title this Two Sentries in keeping with my image of Umqua Bank and its six sentries. Perhaps I have a sub theme for my Eureka project.

Arts Alive tomorrow, Saturday. Please come to see my work at the RAA Gallery at 603 F Street, Eureka - across from the Morris Graves.

AN EXAMPLE FROM MY LESSONS

THE UMPQUA BANK BUILDING, EUREKA, 2012, or SILENT SENTINELS

I took this earlier this year.  I had not really put the finishing touches on it then. Yesterday, I decided to look at it again by working it in Photoshop as an HDR image. As per my usual work flow, I did the remaining aspects in Lightroom-4.

I actually printed the earlier version of this some months back, and I even exhibited it in a judged show. It did not win any awards, but I understand that the judge liked  the image, but thought that the trees were too close to the top of the composition. I corrected that in this rendition, and I completely reworked the luminance values in almost every aspect.
